Postmenopausal hormone therapy and risk of stroke: The Heart and Estrogen-progestin Replacement Study (HERS).

BACKGROUND Observational studies have shown that postmenopausal hormone therapy may increase, decrease, or have no effect on the risk of stroke. To date, no clinical trial has examined this question. To investigate the relation between estrogen plus progestin therapy and risk of stroke among postmenopausal women, we analyzed data collected from the Heart & Estrogen-progestin Replacement Study (...

Pulse pressure and cardiovascular events in postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND Pulse pressure (PP) has been shown to predict risk for cardiovascular events in men; however, this association has not been well established in women. Hormone replacement therapy may improve arterial compliance, but findings from cross-sectional and prospective studies report inconsistent results. We sought to examine the relationship between PP and risk for cardiovascular events, an...

Controls were selected at random from f...

A prospective reevaluation of transient ischemic attacks as a risk factor for death and fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular events.

This assumption is based on comparisons of the survival of the TIA population with that of the general population. Such comparisons may provide biased estimates of the risk associated with TIA because the general population is usually more healthy than TIA patients. ...

Acute Phase Reactants as a Prognostic Factor in Acute Stroke
